Happ and Amaya Go Boom as Cubs Crush Royals, 10-2

KANSAS CITY — The Cubs didn't just beat the Royals Sunday. They flat-out bullied them.

Ian Happ launched a two-run bomb, Miguel Amaya unloaded a three-run shot, and Chicago rolled Kansas City 10-2 to take the series.

Matthew Boyd looked locked in, improving to 8-1 on the year after allowing just two runs and five hits across seven efficient innings. The Cubs' bats did the rest, piling up 18 hits and turning the game into a Sunday afternoon bullpen session.

Michael Busch set the table, Alex Bregman kept the line moving, and Happ cleaned it all up.

Busch got things going early. Michael Conforto drove him in with a sacrifice fly in the first, then came through with an RBI single in the third. Nico Hoerner followed with a run-scoring knock that brought Happ home and made it 3-0.

Bregman joined the fun in the fourth, plating Pete Crow-Armstrong for a 4-0 cushion. But the Royals briefly punched back when Starling Marte launched his second homer of the year — a two-run shot that scored Salvador Perez in the bottom half.

That was as close as it got.

Bregman singled in another run in the sixth, and then Happ made it 7-2 with his 20th homer of the season. The exclamation point came in the seventh when Amaya went deep off Easton McGee for a three-run blast. Bregman, Happ and Busch each collected three hits in the 18-hit attack.

On the Mound and On Deck

Royals starter Randy Dobnak took the loss (2-1), going five innings while surrendering four runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Next up for the Cubs: Shota Imanaga (8-9, 3.60 ERA) takes the ball Tuesday in Washington.

The Royals hit the road Monday to face Tarik Skubal (7-6, 2.81 ERA) and the Dodgers, with Noah Cameron (6-8, 4.37 ERA) on the bump.
