Rays Drop a Freaking Eight-Run Hammer in the 8th, Stun A's 10-6

WEST SACRAMENTO — Forget the slow burn. The Rays brought napalm in the eighth.

Down by four with just three outs to play, Tampa Bay erupted for an eight-run eighth inning, flipping a 6-2 deficit into a 10-6 smash-job over the Athletics on Monday night.

The Inning That Broke the A's

Junior Caminero turned on the heat with a three-run homer — his 34th of the season — after Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda reached on singles to open the frame. Suddenly it was a 6-5 game and the roof was lifting.

Chandler Simpson tied it with an RBI single. Then Taylor Walls powered a two-run single to give the Rays their first lead at 8-6. Because why stop there? Díaz added a sacrifice fly and Aranda — yes, in his second at-bat of the inning — ripped an RBI single to cap the incredible rally at 10-6.

How We Got There

It wasn't all chaos. Yandy Díaz launched the second pitch of the game over the fence for a 1-0 edge. The A's punched back with Tyler Soderstrom's RBI double and a straight steal of home to take a 2-1 lead.

Zack Gelof, fresh off the injured list with a right knee laceration, showed no rust: he went deep in the fifth and added an RBI double in the seventh. Jeff McNeil and Jacob Wilson did damage in the seventh to push the A's lead to 6-2.

But the bullpen imploded. Jose Suarez got just one out while serving up four runs, and Seth Johnson couldn't record an out while being charged with four.

On the Mound

Rays reliever Chris Roycroft (1-0) worked the seventh and wore it a bit, but the bats bailed him out. Starter Freddy Peralta went six solid innings, punching out five while allowing three earned runs.

Next up, the Rays send Nick Martinez (11-3, 2.65 ERA) to the hill against A's rookie Mason Barnett (1-2, 5.56) as the series continues Tuesday.
