The Colorado Rockies just got a gut-punch in the desert. Third baseman Kyle Karros has been placed on the 7-day concussion injured list after a terrifying collision with shortstop Ezequiel Tovar while chasing down a ground ball.

The scary moment went down in the sixth inning of Tuesday night's 3-2 Rockies win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Both infielders attacked the same grounder — and paid the price. Karros took the worst of it, and now he's in concussion protocol.

Before the injury, Karros was quietly putting together a solid rookie season for Colorado, slashing .265 with 10 homers and 44 RBI. The son of former MLB slugger Eric Karros, the 24-year-old has shown flashes of that famous baseball bloodline.

Next man up

The Rockies didn't waste any time. They recalled infielder Adael Amador from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Karros' spot. The 23-year-old switch-hitter was raking in the minors with a .261 average and 11 homers.

Amador's no stranger to the big leagues — he's played for Colorado in each of the last two seasons, though he's hit just .176 with one homer in 148 at-bats. Now he gets another shot to prove he belongs.

No timeline yet for Karros' return, but concussion protocols are no joke. For now, the Rockies' infield gets a new look — and Amador gets the call.
