Bombs Away! Grisham Powers Yankees' Epic Comeback Over Mariners 10-5
NEW YORK — Forget the slow start. The Yankees flipped the switch and turned a sleepy Wednesday night into a full-blown fireworks show, erasing an early deficit and blowing past the crumbling Mariners 10-5.
Trent Grisham was the star of the show, launching two homers and ripping a go-ahead double in the seventh inning. He finished with four RBIs from the leadoff spot and made the Mariners pay every time they thought they had momentum.
Grisham Goes Off
The Yankees' center fielder tied the game in the fifth with a solo shot off Bryce Miller, then broke it open with a game-changing double in the seventh. Oh, and he wasn't done — a two-run bomb in the eighth off Nick Davila put the exclamation point on a night that saw him notch his ninth career multi-homer game and fifth three-hit game of the season. He also scored three times as the Yanks reached double digits for the first time since July 9 at Tampa Bay.
Rookie Spencer Jones also came up huge, driving in three runs. His two-run double in the third and a tying double in the fifth kept the Yankees within striking distance when things looked rough.
Mariners Crumbling
Seattle actually came out swinging. Randy Arozarena went deep for a two-run shot and Julio Rodriguez added a solo blast in the first off Will Warren. Dominic Canzone homered in the third, and Josh Naylor's RBI single in the fifth gave the Mariners a 5-3 lead.
But it wasn't enough. The Mariners have now dropped six straight for the first time since May 2022, and they've lost 15 of 20. At 56-65, they're a season-worst nine games under .500.
Turning Point
The seventh inning was pure chaos — in the best way for the Yanks. After Grisham's go-ahead double, Ben Rice followed with a hard RBI single that skipped off shortstop Colt Emerson's glove. The bases-loaded walk to Jazz Chisholm Jr. made it 8-5, and the Yankees never looked back.
Paul Blackburn picked off Naylor at first base to end the top of the seventh, killing Seattle's momentum right before the Yanks struck. Brent Headrick then struck out the side in the eighth to seal the deal.
Will Warren had a rough outing, allowing five runs and six hits in four-plus innings, tying a career high by serving up three homers. Miller took the no-decision after allowing five runs and seven hits over six innings.
