Angels Crash the Party: Ureña Deals, Trout & Guzman Light Up Texas in 7-0 Smackdown

ANAHEIM — Call it a statement. Call it a beatdown. Just don't call it competitive. The Angels rolled into Thursday night with something to prove, and they left the Rangers in the dust with a dominant 7-0 shutout that was never really in doubt.

Ureña Deals Pure Filth

Walbert Ureña was absolutely locked in. The rookie right-hander surrendered just two hits over six innings, striking out five and walking two while lowering his ERA to a sparkling 2.67. Since May 1, he's been a different animal — posting a 2.43 ERA in 18 appearances and giving up no more than one run in 13 of those outings. On Thursday, he made Texas look helpless at the plate.

José Fermin, Tayler Saucedo, and Sammy Peralta came on in relief and slammed the door, combining for three scoreless innings to seal the five-hitter.

Trout & Guzman: A Two-Man Wrecking Crew

Mike Trout and Denzer Guzman were relentless. Each ripped three singles and drove in a run, headlining a 15-hit assault that had Rangers pitchers scrambling all night. Josh Lowe chipped in two hits and two RBIs, while Adam Frazier added two hits and an RBI of his own.

The Angels finally broke out of their offensive slump, posting 10+ hits for the first time since July 8 — and they did it in style.

deGrom's Night Falls Apart

Meanwhile, on the other side, Jacob deGrom's return didn't go to plan. The veteran was pulled after just two innings due to right triceps fatigue, but not before the Angels tagged him for two runs and five hits in a chaotic 32-pitch second inning. It was deGrom's first five-hit inning since 2017 — a stat he'd probably like to forget.

Game Breaker in the Fifth

The Angels put the game on ice in the fifth, raining down four runs and six hits off Jordan Montgomery. Singles by Trout, Nolan Schanuel, and Vaughn Grissom loaded the bases. Guzman drove in a run on an infield single, Lowe ripped a two-run single, and Jose Siri's RBI groundout made it 6-0. Siri added another RBI single in the seventh for good measure.

What's Next

The Angels now ride a three-game win streak and look to keep it rolling Friday night as Grayson Rodriguez takes the mound against Kansas City. The Rangers, meanwhile, head to West Sacramento to face the Athletics with Kumar Rocker on the bump.
