VLAD JR. WALLOPED: Blue Jays Star Hits Concussion IL After Brutal Third-Base Collision

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays are holding their breath, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is on the shelf.

The six-time All-Star first baseman was placed on the 7-day concussion IL Saturday, just hours after a terrifying collision at third base left him dazed and stumbling home. This isn't a routine day off, folks. This is a real concern for a franchise already fighting to stay relevant in the AL East.

What Went Down

In Friday's 3-1 win over the Yankees, Guerrero was sliding into third when New York rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. tried to leap over him. Lombard's knee and thigh came crashing down directly onto Guerrero's head. The helmet? Gone. The play? Absolute chaos.

Somehow, Guerrero got up, dashed home to score the tying run, but the look on his face after crossing the plate said everything: dazed, off-balance, not himself. He was pulled before the seventh.

Manager John Schneider admitted after the game that Vlad had "a little bit of a headache." By Saturday, that headache hadn't gone away. That's when the organization made the call: no risks with head injuries.

Roster Shuffle Time

To replace Guerrero, Toronto brought up outfielder Daz Cameron from Triple-A Buffalo. Right-hander Lazaro Estrada was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot. The Jays also recalled lefty Ricky Tiedemann and optioned righty Chase Lee back to Triple-A.

Tiedemann's numbers this season at three minor league levels: 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA across seven games (two starts). Not exactly inspiring, but depth is depth.

As for Guerrero, he's been slashing .263 with seven homers and 46 RBIs this season. Not the monster numbers we've come to expect from Vlad, but he's still the heart of this lineup. Losing him--even for a week--stings.

The bigger concern? Head injuries never fit a timeline. The Blue Jays are doing the right thing by putting him on the IL, but the countdown to his return starts now.
