Volpe Is Back, Chisholm Is Out — Yankees' Infield Carousel Keeps Spinning

NEW YORK — The Yankees' infield carousel just got another violent spin.

Anthony Volpe is back in the Bronx. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is out. The Yankees recalled Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday and placed Chisholm on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb, retroactive to Wednesday. The move came before Thursday night's series finale against Colorado.

Volpe's Second Act

Volpe lost his shortstop job in New York to rookie George Lombard Jr., and he had been raking in the minors while learning new spots. In 19 games at second base for the RailRiders, he showed enough to get another look. Over his last six games, Volpe hit .524 with three homers and six RBIs. After being optioned on Aug. 4, he hit .295 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs in 27 games while playing shortstop and third base.

This season has been a grind for Volpe. His Yankees debut was delayed until May 13 after he recovered from October surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He entered Thursday batting .240 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 56 games with New York.

Chisholm's Injury History

Chisholm has spent time on the IL in each season since the Yankees acquired him from Miami in July 2024. He missed a little more than a month last season with a strained right oblique. In 2024, he missed nearly two weeks with a sprained left elbow suffered on a headfirst slide.

The Yankees need Volpe to bring that Triple-A spark back to the big leagues. The injury bug, meanwhile, keeps biting.
