Down Under Domination: Purdy & Co. Put the NFL on Notice in Melbourne

MELBOURNE — Forget the kangaroos. The real animal on display Friday was the San Francisco 49ers' defense.

In the NFL's first regular-season game Down Under, Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes and the Niners flattened the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in front of 100,021 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground — the seventh-largest regular-season crowd in league history.

It was a party from the jump, even with a 10:35 a.m. local kickoff made for U.S. primetime. But for the Rams, the welcome mat was pulled out from under them in brutal fashion.

The Main Event

Purdy finished with 205 yards, hitting Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel for scores. Robinson's 39-yard post route just before halftime flipped the script after a sloppy, sleepy start from both sides.

The 49ers came out of the break with a different energy. Deebo Samuel ripped off a 45-yard kickoff return, and Evans finished the drive with a TD catch over new Rams corner Jaylen Watson.

Then the Niners' defense really went to work.

Matthew Stafford looked nothing like an MVP. He completed 15 of 25 passes for just 155 yards, and Los Angeles — the league's top offense a year ago — managed exactly one score. That came on Kyren Williams' 5-yard run in the second quarter, the NFL's first Australian touchdown.

But the most devastating sequence? The Rams drove to the San Francisco 1-yard line, Puka Nacua was ruled down inches short, and Stafford's fourth-down sneak got stuffed. A total stonewall.

Bad Vibes in LA

Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, was a ghost in his Rams debut — zero tackles after missing time in camp. Head coach Sean McVay didn't hide from the disaster.

“They outplayed us in every facet. I didn’t do nearly a good enough job. This was a humbling day for us,” McVay said. “Sometimes sports can humble you and today was one of those days.”

Travel narrative? The 49ers got to Melbourne a week early and soaked up the local love. The Rams rolled in Thursday morning on California time. It showed.

What’s Next

The 49ers head home to host Miami on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Rams get a shot at redemption Monday, Sept. 21 against the New York Giants.

But in Melbourne, the story was simple: The Niners came, saw and conquered — and they made it look easy.
