Monta Ellis Is Back in the Game — As a College GM, and He's Playing for Mississippi's Forgotten Talent

Monta Ellis hasn't stepped on an NBA court in years, but he's back in basketball — and this time he's not the one expected to drop 30. He's the man building the roster.

On Friday, Alcorn State dropped a bombshell: the former Golden State Warriors guard is officially the program's general manager. No college experience as a player? Doesn't matter. The Mississippi native just used his decade-plus in the league to flip the script and open doors for kids who usually get overlooked.

FROM LANIER HIGH TO THE FRONT OFFICE

Ellis went from starring at Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi, to being selected 40th overall by the Warriors in the 2005 NBA Draft. Now he's back home, planting his flag at Alcorn State, an HBCU that struggled to a 9-23 record last season. But Ellis isn't looking at the record. He's looking at potential.

'This opportunity came to me. Coach Jake Morton reached out and said they were thinking of this idea of me being a general manager. And I was shocked about it at first,' Ellis said. 'This would be a great opportunity for a lot of kids that would be left out.'

That's the mission. Ellis has spent the last decade coaching and training kids, and he's seen too many talented players with no scholarship offers. Now he can do something about it.

A BRAND BOOST FOR ALCORN STATE

Athletic director E. D'Wayne Robinson knows exactly what Ellis brings to the table. 'It's almost like an endorsement from someone that endorses a brand product,' Robinson said. 'There are certain people out there that it raises the level of respect for that product.'

Ellis's name carries weight. His brand opens conversations with potential student-athletes and donors. For a program trying to climb, that's a game-changer.

THE STEPH CURRY CHAPTER HE'S NOT RUNNING FROM

Let's be real: people will always bring up the Warriors days. Ellis earned Most Improved Player in 2006-07 and played alongside a young Steph Curry before Curry became, well, Steph Curry. In 2012, Ellis was traded to Milwaukee for Andrew Bogut — who would win a title with Curry three years later.

But Ellis isn't bitter. He's confident. 'That's what I dealt with. And people know that,' he said. 'Real people that know basketball and all that, they know that. They know the team that I was dealt with. If you switched me and Steph out with the team that won the championships, it'd be the same thing.'

That's a bold take, but it's pure Monta. He took the good with the bad, got paid, and now he's focused on something bigger.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Ellis isn't just a figurehead. He's personally invested, guiding his son Monta Ellis Jr., a 2028 recruit with multiple Division I offers. And he wants to keep Mississippi's best talent in Mississippi.

'I have an opportunity to give to some kids that never felt like they had an opportunity to play Division I or go to a college. I have the ability to make that happen being a GM of Alcorn State,' he said. 'I've been coaching and training kids for the last 10 years, and I've seen a lot of kids that could play and didn't get scholarships.'

Consider this a warning to every other program: Alcorn State just got a whole lot more interesting.
