Rat Emoji Roulette: Judge Pulls Bond in NBA Gambling Scandal After Brutal Courtroom Mic-Drop

A federal judge just made one thing crystal clear: don't play games with the court.

Deniro Laster—co-defendant in the NBA gambling scandal and childhood friend of former Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier—had his bond revoked Tuesday afternoon after a judge ruled he couldn't be trusted to follow the rules. The breaking point? Alleged witness intimidation via rat emojis on Instagram, plus reaching out to co-defendants and potential witnesses despite a no-contact order.

Eastern District of New York Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall didn't mince words, saying Laster was unlikely to abide by his bond conditions going forward. Prosecutors went even harder. U.S. Attorney David Berman called Laster's conduct 'utterly egregious.'

RAT EMOJI? REALLY?

The courtroom drama hit peak levels when Laster's defense attorney, Matthew Evan Corcoran, tried to brush off the glaring symbol as a 'rat cartoon.' Judge DeArcy Hall was not amused.

'Rat cartoon? Come on,' she shot back. 'You think this is my first rodeo. Let's not call it a rat cartoon. ... Don't minimize it with a rat cartoon.'

Corcoran then attempted a classic defense: 'sometimes a rat emoji is just a rat emoji.' That went over like a lead balloon. DeArcy Hall fired back: 'Is that your argument? If it is, it's a bad one.'

At one point, Corcoran argued bond revocation usually happens after a rearrest—and Laster hadn't been rearrested. The judge wasn't buying it. 'Tell me what happens often in these cases,' she said. 'I love being mansplained to.'

Corcoran also claimed the person Laster contacted wasn't on the no-contact list. But the court made it clear: when a no-contact order is in place, the only contact allowed is with lawyers present.

After the ruling, Laster was taken into custody, took off his tie, and was escorted out by U.S. Marshals.

ROZIER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The allegations go back to March 23, 2023, when Rozier was with the Charlotte Hornets facing the New Orleans Pelicans. Prosecutors say Rozier told Laster he'd leave the game early with an injury—information Laster allegedly passed to sports bettors, who then bet the under on Rozier's stats. The alleged payoff? A roughly $70,000 bribe.

Rozier sat at the defendant's table for the entire hearing. His request to move the case from New York to Florida was denied. There was also drama over public statements possibly tainting a fair trial—with Rozier's attorney claiming prosecutors falsely implied Rozier was in a gang.

But Judge DeArcy Hall and prosecutor Berman both made it clear in court: there are no allegations that Rozier is a gang member.

This case is far from over. But one thing's certain—the rat emoji defense didn't stand a chance.
