Liverpool just dropped a financial bombshell that's echoing across the Premier League. Fenway Sports Group has officially sold a minority stake in the club to a consortium that includes none other than Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The 1892 Holdings Era Begins

The consortium is named 1892 Holdings — a nod to the year Liverpool was born — and it's led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers. Bhatia isn't just writing a check; he's stepping in as the club's new vice-chairman.

According to ESPN sources, the stake is in the region of 30%, valuing Liverpool at a jaw-dropping £5.5 billion ($7.45B). Yes, billion with a B.

Who's In The Room?

This isn't just Bezos throwing cash around. The consortium includes K5 Sports fund, led by Bezos, and EE Capital, the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine Saverin, who is set to join Liverpool's board. It marks Bezos' first investment in sport after years of NFL rumors — though the world's third-richest man won't be sitting on Liverpool's board. His seat at the table comes via K5 Global's managing partner, Bryan Baum.

With a reported net worth of $271.4 billion according to Forbes, Bezos brings a whole new level of financial firepower to Anfield.

FSG's Big Bet Pays Off

FSG bought Liverpool for a modest £300 million back in 2010. Now they're retaining majority ownership and operational control, but they've brought in heavy hitters who clearly believe in the club's trajectory. FSG president Mike Gordon made it clear this was about the long game.

"Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club's long-term interests in mind," Gordon said. "Their experience and perspective will complement the strong foundation already in place."

Bhatia echoed the sentiment: "We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come."

What Changes Now?

Day-to-day operations? Unchanged. FSG's control? Still intact. But the message is loud and clear: Liverpool is positioning itself for a future where the financial stakes are higher than ever. This is the first external minority investment in the club since Dynasty Equity bought a 3% stake in September 2023.

The Reds have just added some serious billionaire backing to their corner. The rest of the Premier League has been warned.
