Maresca's Captain Conundrum: Why City's Armband Call Can Wait
Manchester City's leadership picture is officially in flux, and Enzo Maresca is in no rush to solve it.
The new City boss has confirmed he'll wait until the transfer window slams shut before locking in his full captaincy group. Why? Because the squad could look very different by then.
The exodus effect
Bernardo Silva has already packed his bags. Rodri? Still speculative, with Barcelona circling. That's why Maresca is keeping his options open — and notably, he didn't even mention Rodri when naming his current leaders.
"At the moment it is Rúben and Erling, and I want to wait until the end of the transfer window and pick two more," Maresca said.
So right now, it's Rúben Dias and Erling Haaland flying the flag. But there's a twist: Maresca hinted he's not totally sold on Haaland wearing the armband — because the Norwegian loves to join the skipper for goal celebrations. Awkward when you're the captain.
That leaves Dias as the front-runner to take the armband, a role he's been prepping for since joining the leadership group in 2021. And Maresca has made it clear: being captain isn't a privilege, it's extra responsibility.
"Ruben has shown during his time at this club how he is as a player, in terms of leadership," Maresca said. "It's important for the captain and the leader to know that the reason they are captain is because I expect more from them. It's not because I give them more freedom or advantage. It's the opposite, the leadership group and captains have to show more and give more than the others."
Plan B: Enzo Fernández or in-house options
If Rodri does exit, City could revisit a move for Enzo Fernández — even though Chelsea's self-imposed bid deadline has passed. The Argentine is part of the Blues' leadership group, so he fits the profile.
But Maresca doesn't have to go shopping. Marc Guéhi, Joško Gvardiol and Phil Foden are all in-house candidates, with Foden reportedly keen on taking a bigger leadership role.
McAidoo stays: City's teenage spark
One bright spot: 18-year-old Ryan McAidoo is staying. Maresca called him one of the "real surprises" of preseason, after starring against Inter Milan. The Italian coach loves what he sees — describing the teenager as "the kind of winger I love."
"For him the best thing is to stay with us, to learn and be around the first team every day," Maresca said. "Try to be intelligent, try to learn from Antoine [Semenyo] and Jérémy [Doku]. When I say try to learn, it's not in terms of how to dribble — it's about working hard because it can be difficult with young players, they can stop working because they feel they are ready when they are not."
With Savinho linked to Tottenham, McAidoo's path to minutes just got clearer. The kid is staying, and City's future looks a little brighter because of it.
