Maresca Won't Panic-Buy After Community Shield Nightmare — But City's Midfield SOS Is Loud

Despite the shellacking, Maresca is keeping his cool. Speaking after the match, the new boss made it clear that one bad result — even a really bad one — isn't going to send the club into a panic-buying spiral.

"We knew already before the game that the things that we need to do, it is not because we lost the game or even if we were winning the game, we would [not think in a] different way," Maresca said. "We are quite clear about what we need to do. And for sure, as I said, we are going to do something before the window transfer closes."

City were missing Rodri, who only returned to training on Friday and is reportedly being chased hard by Barcelona. Without him, the midfield got overrun. The solution? Chelsea's Enzo Fernández and Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi are both on the radar. When pressed on Bouaddi, Maresca played it cool but hinted at urgency.

"He is still a Lille player," Maresca said. "But any new signing, any new player ... It's better because we're going to start the Premier League in one week. And if they start to work with us as soon as possible, it's better because they can also understand the way we want to play."

One bright spot? Jack Grealish. Back from a loan spell at Everton, the England international made his first City appearance in over a year, coming on at halftime for Jérémy Doku. Maresca gave him a cautious thumbs-up.

"Again, Jack was inside when we were 2-0 down. The game already became complicated after that. But overall, I think Jack was good," Maresca said. "And again, the ones that are still here, they're going to work every day. And if they deserve, they're going to get minutes."

City open their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on Aug. 23. If the midfield isn't reinforced by then, this defeat to Arsenal might not be the worst thing that happens to them this season.
