Sky Blues Land Awoniyi: Striker Exits Forest With Fire in His Belly
The Taiwo Awoniyi era at Nottingham Forest is officially over. Coventry City have secured the signature of the Nigerian striker for an undisclosed fee, bringing a proven Premier League weapon into their ranks.
The 29-year-old arrives with serious pedigree. Awoniyi scored 23 times in 103 appearances across all competitions for Forest after arriving in 2022. But last season was a different story—he managed just three league starts, stuck on the fringes and starving for minutes.
Time to remind everyone
This is a move built for a comeback. Awoniyi knows exactly what he's signing up for.
“I am very excited about this season, and I can't wait to get started,” he said. “I'm really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship. They were incredible.”
Coventry are getting a player with something to prove—and a history of delivering when it matters.
Forest say goodbye with respect
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis made it clear Awoniyi leaves with a permanent place in the club's story.
“Taiwo will always have a special place in the history of Nottingham Forest. He has been one of the defining figures in our journey and given our supporters moments of great joy that will never be forgotten,” Marinakis said.
It wasn't just the boardroom sending him off in style. Manager Oliver Glasner revealed Awoniyi got a guard of honour after Forest's preseason win over Brest.
“He always gives 100% for the team, he always gives 100% for the bench, and that's why he deserves such a farewell,” Glasner said. “I wish him all the best at his next club, just not when they play us.”
A big move with history behind it
Awoniyi joined Forest in 2022 for £17.2m ($23m), making him the club's then-record signing. Now he's ready to write a new chapter away from the City Ground.
