Deshaun Watson Answers the Noise: 'Awesome' First Half Signals Real Comeback

CHICAGO — The Cleveland Browns walked out of Soldier Field with an L on the scoreboard, but if you were looking for actual signs of life at quarterback, Deshaun Watson just handed you a flashlight.

Watson made his long-awaited return to the field Saturday in Cleveland's 34-10 preseason loss to the Bears — his first game action since tearing his right Achilles in October 2024. And for a half, he looked like the guy the Browns bet the franchise on.

The Comeback Kid

Playing with the first-team offense, Watson completed 10 of 15 passes for 126 yards and led two scoring drives — the only points Cleveland managed all day. That included a slick 10-play, 86-yard march, capped by a 14-yard touchdown run from rookie receiver KC Concepcion. The dude was slinging it.

First-year head coach Todd Monken was practically glowing.

'It was awesome,' Monken said. 'It was so cool to watch him play... He was having fun today. And that is so cool.'

Sure, it wasn't perfect. Watson coughed up a strip-sack on a fourth-and-2, and the Bears recovered. But for a guy who had two Achilles surgeries and missed all of 2025, just being out there and moving like that? That's a win.

No Doubt In This Building

Watson, who has played only 19 games since the Browns traded for him in 2022, says the outside noise never moved him.

'I don't think there is anything that I doubt in myself,' Watson said. 'That's the reason why I worked hard these last two years to get back to that.'

Between suspension and injuries, Watson's Cleveland run has been a nightmare. But Saturday was a flash of the comeback arc he's been grinding for.

The Battle Heats Up

And don't forget the other guy. Rookie Shedeur Sanders got the second-half reps and went 6-of-11 for 79 yards with an ugly interception. Dillon Gabriel also tossed a pick in mop-up duty. Monken's QB room is deep — but Watson just grabbed the spotlight.

Next up: joint practices with the Bills, then a preseason date against Buffalo, where Sanders starts and Watson plays in the third quarter. This camp battle is just getting spicy.

'I was pleased with our quarterback play,' Monken said. 'It felt like we are going to be able to throw the football.'

First step, checked. Doubters? Still loud. But Deshaun Watson just reminded everyone he's not done yet.
