BEARS BACKFIELD REELING: MONANGAI OUT WEEKS WITH HYPEREXTENDED KNEE
The Chicago Bears just caught a bad break in the backfield. Running back Kyle Monangai is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering a knee injury during Sunday's practice, a source confirmed.
An MRI revealed Monangai hyperextended his right knee, forcing him to leave practice early. It's the latest setback for the second-year back, who also sat out several days earlier in camp with a soft-tissue injury.
Monangai didn't suit up for the Bears' 34-10 preseason blowout of the Browns, but he was out there for a non-padded practice Sunday. The injury happened when he got tackled from behind during an 11-on-11 period — a reminder of how quickly things can go sideways in this league.
What This Means for Chicago's RB Room
Monangai shares the backfield with D'Andre Swift. Now, while he heals, the Bears need a Plan B. During Monangai's earlier absence, Salvon Ahmed handled most of the second-team reps. Roschon Johnson is another name to watch for a bigger workload behind Swift.
Monangai's rookie stats — 169 carries for 783 yards and five touchdowns, plus 18 catches for 164 yards — show he's a legitimate weapon when healthy. His absence will sting, even if it's only for a few weeks.
Roster Shake-Up: Davenport Reunites With Allen, Prince Added
The Bears also loaded up on defense Monday. Defensive end Marcus Davenport is back with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen after playing his first five seasons under Allen in New Orleans. Davenport is now on his third NFC North stop — he spent the last two seasons with the Lions and played for the Vikings in 2023. In 2025, he totaled one sack and three quarterback hits in eight games (seven starts) before a chest injury ended his season.
Chicago also signed defensive back De'Antre Prince to the 90-man roster.
The Bears' depth is about to be tested while Monangai recovers — because the NFC North doesn't hand out sympathy points.
