The Atlanta Falcons just sent a clear message: the pass rush isn't going down without a fight. In the wake of two brutal blows to their edge room, the team has inked veteran sack specialist Za'Darius Smith to a one-year deal, the club announced Tuesday.

Smith, 33, spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles and is reportedly earning $6 million on the deal, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He also knows exactly what head coach Kevin Stefanski wants, having played under him in Cleveland during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The timing is no coincidence. The Falcons lost Jalon Walker for the season after he tore his ACL in practice. Then came the hammer: James Pearce Jr. was suspended for the first eight games of 2026 for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy following a February domestic violence arrest. Two of their top sack artists, gone—at least for a big chunk of the season.

Enter Smith, a player who doesn't need a highlight reel to prove he can still hunt quarterbacks. He had 1.5 sacks in five games last year, but the resume speaks for itself: 70.5 career sacks, three seasons with double-digit sacks, and a 2024 campaign where he bagged nine combined between Cleveland and Detroit. Oh, and that 13.5-sack breakout with Green Bay in 2019? That's the kind of ceiling this Falcons defense is hoping still exists.

Veteran room, high stakes

Smith joins a group of one-year-deal vets—Samson Ebukam, Azeez Ojulari, and Cameron Thomas—all looking to flip potential into production. Meanwhile, Bralen Trice remains the great unknown, still waiting for his first regular-season snap after back-to-back torn ACLs.

This is a Falcons team that finally found its sack mojo last season, setting a franchise record with 57 sacks. Pearce supplied 10.5 and Walker chipped in 5.5.
