Texans Camp Chronicles: Stroud's Arm, Dell's Comeback, and a Defense Hunting Perfection

H-Town Is Heating Up

Training camp is in full swing in Houston, and the Texans are serving up storylines hotter than a Texas summer. From a long-awaited receiver return to a defense that's relentlessly chasing greatness, D.J. Bien-Aime has the intel you need before the preseason kicks off Aug. 13.

Tank Dell Is Back (And He's Not Scared)

Wide receiver Tank Dell finally got back on the practice field — marking his first padded action since that brutal Week 16 injury in 2024. The 2023 third-round pick suffered multiple torn ligaments and a dislocated kneecap, but he's been limited in practice and even caught passes from C.J. Stroud during individual drills, running full-speed routes.

Dell spoke to the media for the first time and made it crystal clear: fear isn't in the equation. With Houston's doctor calling his knee "100 percent stable," Dell said, "Trusting the work you put in prior to going out there. Going out there to put your foot in the ground, trusting the process with the training staff and what they had set out for me. So when I got out here, I wasn't scared."

Coach DeMeco Ryans won't rush him. "Tank is on the right plan," Ryans said. The goal is to get him ready for 11-on-11 contact reps. Baby steps, but this is a huge win for the Texans' offense.

Stroud's Wallet Is About to Get Heavier

Texans GM Nick Caserio revealed there's a "possibility" the team and Stroud can hammer out a contract extension. Stroud, entering Year 4 and eligible for the first time, is staying locked in while his agent handles the business.

Ryans kept it real: "I truly believe you get the contract by what you do on the field. It doesn't matter what you say, what I say. It's about how you perform on the field, and if you're worthy of getting a contract and you deserve it, it'll happen for you." Preach.

Oh, and in case you missed it: the Texans are bringing back former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney. That's a reunion worth watching.

Jayden Higgins Is 'Hooping'

If you're sleeping on second-year wideout Jayden Higgins, wake up. He's been the star of camp, making contested catches against All-Pro corner Derek Stingley Jr. in both team drills and 1-on-1s. During a third-down period, Higgins hauled in a 20-yard grab with Stingley draped all over him. Then he bounced off an aggressive jam in 1-on-1s and got loose for an easy toss from Stroud.

Pro Bowl receiver Nico Collins sees it: "He's hooping right now, and I can't wait to see him rock out when it really matters." Stroud called for a "dominant" Year 2 from Higgins earlier in camp — and so far, he's delivering.

The Defense Is Hungry — And Not Satisfied

Saturday night's practice was ugly for the offense. Stroud dealt with constant pressure, the run game went nowhere, and the defense feasted with sacks, an interception from Pro Bowl safety Calen Bullock, and a ton of pass breakups. But the coordinator, Matt Burke, called their performance just "okay." That's the standard now. They're chasing perfection, and they won't settle for less.

Padded practices have been a showcase for the D, too. On Day 1, Stroud was forced to scramble, exotic blitzes came from everywhere, and Bullock picked off Stroud. Ryans called that first full-pad day "successful" — and admitted "there's a lot of all-stars in shorts" before the real work began.

Camp Fire Starters

• Keylan Rutledge is bringing the dog out. The first-round pick got into a mini tussle with Danielle Hunter after a big run by Woody Marks. Aggression? Check.
• Azeez Al-Shaair was slow to get up after a collision with Dalton Schultz, but he was fine shortly after.
• Derek Stingley Jr. collided with Henry To'oTo'o and shook it off. No big deal.
• Backup corner Alijah Huzzie made a slick INT off Davis Mills, ripping the ball away from the receiver.
• Kamari Lassiter snagged a diving INT off Stroud and literally punted the ball in celebration. Baller move.

The Texans are mixing intensity with intelligence, and the vibe is different. With Stroud dealing, Dell working back, Higgins breaking out, and that defense playing angry, Houston has every right to feel dangerous. Stay locked in — camp updates are coming hot until the preseason opener.
