Falcons Camp Chaos: QB Drama, Big Money, and a Devastating ACL Blow
The Atlanta Falcons rolled into Flowery Branch with playoff hopes and a whole lot of questions. Two weeks into camp, we've got answers — some encouraging, some gut-punch brutal.
The biggest storyline? The quarterback room. Michael Penix Jr. is still not cleared for 11-on-11 work after last November's ACL surgery, and he's not sugarcoating it: "If I can't be on the field, how am I going to be the starter?" Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa has been dealing with a tight back, but he's slowly ramping up — going 6-of-8 in 11s on Saturday, including a 30-yard dime to Jahan Dotson and a play-action lob to Drake London. Coach Kevin Stefanski hasn't named a starter, but it's looking like Tua's job to lose.
The Bijan Breakthrough
After a five-day hold-in, running back Bijan Robinson finally signed a three-year extension worth up to $75 million — making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. He got his first carries in 11s on Friday and immediately reminded everyone why he got paid: a wheel route from Tua that would've gone for a 90-yard score. Brian Robinson Jr. held it down in his absence, but this is still Bijan's backfield.
A Crushing Blow to the Pass Rush
Second-year edge rusher Jalon Walker — who posted 5.5 sacks as a rookie — is done for the season after tearing his ACL at practice. That's a massive hit to a defense that desperately needed his juice off the edge. The Falcons responded by signing veteran defensive end Cameron Sample, but replacing Walker's explosiveness won't be easy.
Camp Standouts & Rotations
Undrafted rookie quarterback Jack Strand has been the surprise of camp, drawing praise from Tua himself: "Dude can sling the ball." Strand has been taking first-team reps while the two big-name QBs heal up.
Right tackle is a rotating door — Michael Jerrell, Brandon Walton, and seventh-rounder Ethan Onianwa have all gotten looks. But free-agent signee Jawaan Taylor was activated from the PUP list Monday and is expected to lock down the starting job once he's cleared.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich returned to practice Monday after tragically losing his wife Cristina to cancer. His players are rallying around him. Linebacker Divine Deablo said, "Everybody just wants to play for 'Brich' at the end of the day."
What's Next
The Falcons open the preseason Friday against the Denver Broncos. Stefanski hasn't said whether Tua will play, but Penix can't until he's cleared for full team drills. Check back often — this camp is only going to get more interesting.
