Chiefs Camp Chronicles: Fights, Rookie Heat, and Mahomes' Comeback Buzz
The Chiefs are grinding through camp at Missouri Western State, and it's already gotten spicy. Six straight practices before a day off will do that — tempers flared, punches nearly flew, and Patrick Mahomes says the juice is all about competition.
It got chippy in St. Joe
Saturday's practice finally delivered the fireworks Andy Reid's gauntlet was designed to create. Defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah and left guard Kingsley Suamataia got tangled after a rep, with Suamataia throwing a punch as teammates played referee. Later, RB Kenneth Walker III and safety Alohi Gilman mixed it up after a sideline hit — Walker spiked the ball at Gilman and tackled him. Reid didn't flinch: it's hot, it's football, and sometimes that's exactly how you know it's real.
"It's super competitive on both sides, so little scuffles here and there but nothing crazy," Mahomes said. "As long as we keep it like that and keep competing, that's where you get the best team you can get."
Rookies making noise
The star of camp? Fifth-round receiver Cyrus Allen. The rookie has been popping since Day 1, making a leaping red-zone TD grab in 7-on-7 and earning trust from Mahomes fast. He missed four practices with a left shin injury, but he's back catching passes and still turning heads.
On the defensive line, first-round DT Peter Woods is living up to the billing. He split reps with Trey Smith in 1-on-1s and flashed the kind of quickness that has Chris Jones excited. Second-round EDGE R Mason Thomas has also been a problem off the edge. This youth movement on the D-line is very real.
Mahomes is moving
The franchise QB is still working back from December surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. But he's already shown more burst than he did this summer — rolling left and right, throwing on the move, and operating from under center more than usual. The Chiefs are not putting a leash on him.
"We're not going to put any limitations on what Patrick can do," pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier said. "Everything is open — under center, rolling left or right, the whole playbook."
Injury check and position battles
Right guard Trey Smith is dealing with a hip issue but has been told he'll be OK. Rashee Rice's right knee is being managed carefully — he's back for 11-on-11 work but still getting eased in. Xavier Worthy (sprained right shoulder) and Ashton Gillotte (strained hamstring) are banged up. Nick Bolton, Drue Tranquill and L'Jarius Sneed have also had maintenance days.
Keep an eye on undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson. He's been running with the first-team offense at right tackle, pushing veteran Jaylon Moore for real reps. Reid has noticed: "Physically, he's got all the tools."
Justin Fields saw his first 11-on-11 reps with the first-team offense Thursday and could be the guy in the preseason opener. Meanwhile, Mahomes likely won't play — Reid says it's unlikely.
Camp rolls on. With the preseason opener Aug. 13, every rep matters. Buckle up. The Chiefs are back, they're feisty, and they look ready to bounce.
