Seahawks Eyeing Troubled Corner Terrion Arnold After 'Great Tryout' — But the Baggage is Heavy
RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks are kicking the tires on one of the most talented — and most complicated — free agents on the market.
Coach Mike Macdonald confirmed Monday that the team met with former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold over the weekend, hosting him for a visit and workout at team headquarters. The transaction wire listed it as a tryout, and Macdonald didn't mince words about how it went.
"It's enough right now that we had him in for a great visit, a great tryout," Macdonald said. "It's a situation where there's other things that are surrounding it. We're aware of that. But we're working through the situation right now."
Yeah, "other things" is putting it mildly.
The Legal Elephant in the Room
Arnold was released by Detroit in late June — less than a week after being arrested in Tampa on felony charges tied to a robbery and kidnapping from early February. Prosecutors say the 23-year-old orchestrated the kidnapping and beating of three men he wrongly suspected of stealing $100,000 in cash, luxury watches and bags from him.
Arnold has denied the allegations through his representatives. He's facing four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery — charges that carry a potential life sentence. No trial date has been set.
He turned himself in on June 24, posted a $1 million bond on June 30, and is currently confined to his residence in Tallahassee, Florida, except for playing, training, traveling with a team, or court appearances.
The Lions cut him on June 29.
Why Seattle Is Still Interested
Here's the thing: the Seahawks have history with Arnold. They were hot on his trail before the 2024 draft, when the Alabama product went 24th overall to Detroit.
Seahawks defensive backs coach Karl Scott recruited Arnold to Alabama — though he left before Arnold's freshman season. Current Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe was a college teammate of Arnold's.
"Karl recruited him, to my knowledge, but did not coach him, so it's not as big of a relationship as you might expect," Macdonald said. "But he's definitely a person that we would talk to."
The Seahawks are also thin at cornerback after letting Riq Woolen walk in free agency. Right now, Noah Igbinoghene and Nehemiah Pritchett are battling for the No. 3 spot behind Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe. Rookie Julian Neal is sidelined with an injury.
What's the Play?
"We're going to do our due diligence," Macdonald said. "There's a lot of people in Terrion's corner that we respect in terms of the type of guy he is."
Arnold has one interception and 18 passes defensed in 24 career games — but he only played eight last season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. And even if Seattle signs him, nobody knows when his legal situation would allow him to suit up.
"I think we understand that anything is kind of on the table," Macdonald said.
Other teams are circling too. According to NFL Network, Arnold has a visit scheduled with the New Orleans Saints and already met with the Houston Texans.
So yeah, the Seahawks are intrigued. But this isn't just a football decision — it's a high-stakes gamble with real consequences. Stay tuned.
