Derek Carr Is Trading NFL Helmets for UCLA Film Rooms

Derek Carr isn't done with football. He's just changed zip codes.

The former Raiders and Saints quarterback is joining UCLA as a special adviser to head coach Bob Chesney, the program announced Monday. Carr will assist the Bruins' offensive staff with game-planning strategy and work directly with UCLA's quarterbacks — all in a volunteer role.

From NFL star to college mentor

Carr spent 11 seasons in the NFL, earned four Pro Bowl selections and announced his retirement in May 2025. Now he's bringing that résumé to Westwood, where Chesney is just getting started.

“We are excited to welcome Derek to our program,” Chesney said. “He has played the quarterback position at a high level for more than a decade, and his experience, leadership and football knowledge will be an incredible resource for our coaching staff and student-athletes. What stands out most is his passion for the game and his commitment to developing young people. Derek will have a tremendous impact on our players and is a great addition to our program.”

A familiar face in the building

Here's the connection: UCLA general manager Darrick Yray, who is in his first season with the Bruins. Carr and Yray overlapped at Fresno State from 2009 to 2013, with Yray spending time as an offensive assistant and later as assistant director of football operations with the Bulldogs.

“I've known Darrick for a long time and have great respect for the work he's done throughout his career,” Carr said. “The opportunity to help Coach Chesney, the staff and the quarterbacks at UCLA was one that really excited me. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences and helping support the program in any way I can.”

What this means for UCLA

Chesney arrives in Westwood after a dominant two-year run at James Madison, where he posted a 21-6 record, won a Sun Belt title and led the Dukes to the College Football Playoff last season. Now he's adding a seasoned NFL veteran to the staff to help elevate UCLA's quarterback room.
