Welcome to the Grinder

The New York Giants packed their bags for West Virginia, and John Harbaugh didn't just bring sunscreen. The new head coach has turned training camp at The Greenbrier into a full-contact reality show — no days off, no distractions, just football. Harbaugh himself gave the whole experience an A-plus, saying the team improved tremendously over 12 days in the mountains.

"It's been really everything," Harbaugh said. "The guys have been able to lock in on the football. It's everything we could want."

Run Defense: From Disaster to Dominance?

Last season's run defense was historically bad — a whopping 5.3 yards per carry allowed. That's not a typo. It's a nightmare. But the early returns from camp suggest the Giants are serious about flipping the script.

Veteran nose tackle DJ Reader has been an absolute force in the middle. First-round pick Arvell Reese is bringing the hammer, flashing in live drills and earning praise from Reader himself: "The rookie has been impressive. Kid has a real chance to be special."

Edge rusher Brian Burns summed it up: "We just really put an emphasis on being in our gap but also having ... a mean mentality when it comes to the run. We've got some goals that we want to reach this year."

Nabers Is Coming... Slowly

Malik Nabers is on the comeback trail after knee surgery, and the star receiver is looking sharper by the day. He was back doing individual drills, cutting, jumping, landing on the surgically repaired leg — all the good stuff. Harbaugh says the next step is working Nabers back into team drills, with a Week 1 return against the Cowboys looking very realistic.

"[Return to play coordinator Allison Boudreau] is working with him, and she's been working on situations where you're off-balance, landing off-balance and unpredictable type situations," Harbaugh said.

The OBJ Revenge Tour

Odell Beckham Jr. is making this roster decision painful for the Giants — in the best way possible. After a quiet start, OBJ exploded with a leaping touchdown grab in front of 2,000 fans at The Greenbrier, then followed it up with a strong practice working with the first-team offense.

The veteran is still getting open, still creating separation and still making plays. The Giants have a crowded receiver room, but OBJ is forcing his way into the conversation.

QB Watch: Jaxson Dart's Rollercoaster

It's been a bumpy ride for Jaxson Dart. The second-year QB is learning a new offense without his top target, and it shows. Some days he's tossing dimes and scrambling for scores; other days he's throwing interceptions to safeties who are just standing there.

Dart went 16-of-19 in one practice and led a game-winning drive in a red-zone period. The next day? More turnovers and frustration. Harbaugh says the football response was there after a rough patch, praising Dart's resilience. But the consistency isn't there yet.

"We're taking steps each day," Dart said. "The really good thing I'm seeing about our offense is the communication after practices to be able to fix the adjustments the next day."

Other Camp Intel

The kicker battle is heating up: Dominic Zvada went a perfect 10-for-10 in one practice and is now 28-of-31 at camp, while Ben Sauls is also delivering — both were perfect on Aug. 10. Injuries are piling up at cornerback — Greg Newsome II and Dru Phillips are banged up — and the Giants may need to sign another body. But the biggest story remains the culture shift: tough, gritty, competitive football. Harbaugh's squad is grinding, and the early signs are impossible to ignore.
