Vikings Camp: Kyler Still King, But J.J. Won't Back Down—And Rookies Are Stealing the Show

Training camp in Eagan has become must-see TV, and not just because of Justin Jefferson's highlight grabs. The Vikings are deep in a quarterback war, with Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy trading haymakers under the Minnesota sun.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell still refuses to tip his hand. "Nothing has really changed from a standpoint of the timeline," he said after Sunday's night practice. Murray remains the favorite in the building, but McCarthy is doing his best to make it complicated.

The QB battle: Murray's edge vs. McCarthy's arm

Murray showed why he's the frontrunner on Aug. 1, carving up the defense with a series of downfield dimes and taking 16 of 22 first-team reps. But the defense bit back Sunday, intercepting him twice. McCarthy, meanwhile, keeps hitting deep outs—he's made that throw his signature move this summer.

Jefferson, the man in the middle of it all, sees the silver lining. "Just obviously having somebody pretty much breathing down your neck... it's always going to be pressure," he said. "I hope it definitely betters J.J. because he's definitely a younger guy."

Rookies making noise

Day 3 picks are crashing the party. Running back Demond Claiborne ripped off a 70-yard run with a nifty jump cut. Cornerback Charles Demmings keeps breaking up passes, including two on Jefferson earlier in camp. On defense, rookie linemen Caleb Banks and Domonique Orange are getting first-team reps, and linebacker Jake Golday is flashing too.

Health check and hybrid toys

Left tackle Christian Darrisaw says he feels the best he has in two years after his knee issues, though he still took a veteran's rest day. Jordan Addison is back catching passes after a thumb scare. And Jamal Adams? He's now wearing No. 32 and working at safety—a position switch that tells you Brian Flores has plans for him.

Adams, who started as a safety in 2017, isn't sure what his exact role will be. "It's going to be a little bit of everything, just being versatile in a lot of ways," he said.

With the preseason opener on the horizon, the clock is ticking. The QB call might not come until later this month, but one thing's clear: this Vikings camp has no shortage of drama.
