Jets Camp Chaos: Bailey's Ankle, Geno's Laser Eyes, and the Interception Curse

Let's be real: the New York Jets are never boring. And this training camp? Absolute chaos in the best way. From a No. 2 overall pick limping off with a bum ankle to a 35-year-old quarterback showing up with red contact lenses like some kind of football Terminator, there's no shortage of storylines in Florham Park.

Bailey's Ankle Scare

The biggest gut-punch moment came at the end of Saturday's controlled scrimmage when rookie edge rusher David Bailey walked off favoring his left ankle. Coach Aaron Glenn confirmed it's an ankle injury and listed him as day-to-day. Bailey, the No. 2 overall pick, had been an absolute menace before the scare — unofficially recording a sack and two pressures, and probably should've had another sack if the refs weren't whistle-shy.

Good news? He jogged back to the sideline after getting checked out. Jets fans can exhale. This defense needs him desperately after managing just 26 sacks last season, second-fewest in the league.

Geno's Laser Focus (and Those Lenses)

Geno Smith is having himself a camp. On Saturday, he went 12-of-20 for 157 yards and led the starting offense on a 65-yard TD drive to open the scrimmage. Then things got ugly — five penalties, two sacks, and just one TD drive in nine series. But the offensive coordinator Frank Reich can't stop gushing.

"He's a leader of the offense and, make no mistake about it, in every way, shape and form," Reich said. "His laser focus... This man is laser focused like people don't understand."

Oh, and about those red contact lenses? Smith says they're to cut down glare, inspired by former Jet Santonio Holmes. "It blocks out the sunlight... keeps the glare from the sun out of your eyes." Sure, Geno. It also gives you that scary villain look. We're here for it.

The Interception Curse

Remember when the Jets became the first team in NFL history to go an entire season without a single interception? Yeah, that's still haunting this defense. But they made a statement on Monday when Minkah Fitzpatrick — the big-money safety addition — picked off Geno Smith's first pass in 11-on-11 drills.

"Shoot, I tell that to myself, even in my sleep," cornerback Brandon Stephens said. This defense is determined to erase that embarrassing stain.

QB Battle Heats Up

Rookie Cade Klubnik is pushing for the No. 2 job, and he showed flashes Saturday with a 66-yard bomb to Isaiah Williams plus an 11-yard TD pass to Jelani Woods. He finished 10-of-14 for 154 yards, two TDs, and one pick. But consistency is a problem — he struggled badly Thursday, going 1-for-5 in red-zone drills with an interception.

Bailey Zappe isn't going away quietly. He's the steady veteran, but preseason games will decide this thing. And coach Glenn says "everybody's playing" — so buckle up.

Injury Bug Bites

The tight end room, which was supposed to be a strength, is already banged up. First-round pick Kenyon Sadiq suffered a setback from hernia surgery and will miss a couple weeks. Backup RB Isaiah Davis is out with a minor knee injury. Rookie safety V.J. Payne has a bone bruise that'll sideline him 3-4 weeks. And edge rusher Joseph Ossai still hasn't practiced (PUP list).

On the bright side: Darrell Jackson Jr. is getting first-team reps with T'Vondre Sweat sidelined, and the rookie looks like he might stick.

Breece Hall's Contract Looks Better By The Day

The Jets locked up Breece Hall to a 3-year, $43.5 million extension in May. At the time, it ranked fourth among RBs. After the market exploded with Bijan Robinson, Jonathan Taylor, and Jahmyr Gibbs getting paid, Hall now ranks eighth. Frank Reich's reaction? "Man, am I glad we got that done." Smart money, Gang Green.
