McCarthy's Reality Check: QB Job 'Out of My Control' — But He's Not Going Anywhere

EAGAN, Minn. — The quarterback room in Minnesota just got a cold splash of reality. J.J. McCarthy lost the starting gig to Kyler Murray, but he's making one thing crystal clear: He's not leaving.

"Obviously, every competitor wants to play," McCarthy said Wednesday. "But moving forward, it's just about continuing to work hard and just staying ready for when my number's called."

The decision was 'out of my control'

After an injury-plagued 2025 campaign, the Vikings signed Murray in March and O'Connell announced an open competition. Now the coach has pulled the trigger, naming Murray the starter. McCarthy isn't pretending he had a say in it.

"There's so many things out of my control, like the heat today," he said. "And it's just really having the discernment to figure out which of the two [quarterbacks], and that was one of the things outside of my control. And me attacking and optimizing every opportunity, which was in my control, and that's all I was focusing on."

O'Connell said Tuesday that Murray "shown enough" and that he was drawn in by "what could be." McCarthy now slots in as the No. 2 quarterback — but with veteran Carson Wentz also on the roster, trade speculation is already heating up.

McCarthy digs in

If the Vikings are looking to move on, they'll have to move McCarthy themselves. The No. 10 overall pick in 2024 isn't asking for an exit.

"This is the place I want to be," he said. "And I love every single person in this building. I love the state. I love the fanbase. And I'm going to continue to just do whatever I can for this team and this organization."

That's a long way from the start of camp, when McCarthy said he was "100%" sure the competition would be fair. Now he says he wasn't thinking about fairness "at all."

"I couldn't control anything during," he said. "I couldn't control anything after. The only thing I could do is focus on that next rep and keep at it."

Roommates, not rivals

So what's the relationship with the man who took his job? McCarthy isn't here for drama.

"Yeah, he's just one of my teammates that I care for and respect and just like all my teammates in that locker room," he said. "So, it's about just doing whatever I can for the room and this team and moving forward."

McCarthy's future may be out of his control. But his loyalty to Minnesota? That's one thing he's holding onto with both hands.
