Eagles Camp Gets Chippy: Ojomo-Johnson Brawl Steals the Show
PHILADELPHIA -- Camp fights are part of NFL life, but Thursday's dust-up between defensive tackle Moro Ojomo and offensive tackle Fred Johnson took things to a whole other level.
It all went down on Day 11 of Eagles training camp. During team drills, Ojomo took exception to a late shove from Johnson, squared up and looked like he was ready to throw down. Coaches tried to let them play through it — bad idea.
On the very next snap, Johnson put Ojomo on the ground and landed on him with everything he had. Punches started flying. And then things got even more tense: Ojomo got through the scrum and dove at Johnson's knees, taking the 6-foot-7, 326-pound tackle down.
Peacemakers on the scene
Players and staff jumped in to break it up. GM Howie Roseman, head coach Nick Sirianni and chief security officer Dom DiSandro all converged on Johnson to calm him down. Roseman also checked in with Ojomo, then spent about five minutes with Johnson after practice while the lineman sat on blocking pads.
The fight halted team drills entirely. The Eagles regrouped, reset with a huddle, and closed out the day with a more mellow developmental period. Not exactly the send-off they wanted before the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
Sirianni had actually talked earlier Thursday about how much guys crave real competition at this point in camp.
"I'm just so excited to see all the guys compete. At the end of the day, this business is for people that are ultracompetitive," Sirianni said. "And it's always good to go against somebody else. Sometimes at this point of camp, you're like, 'Man, I just want to hit somebody else and go against somebody else.'"
Message received, coach. Just maybe keep the punches out of it.
