Rams Camp Buzz: Donald's Shadow Looms, Garrett's Knee Talks, and the QB Battle Heats Up

The Los Angeles Rams are cooking at Loyola Marymount, and the vibes are electric. But underneath the sunshine and highlight catches, there's real drama bubbling: an all-time great might be returning, a reigning DPOY is banged up, and the backup quarterback job is suddenly must-watch TV.

Aaron Donald: Will He or Won't He?

The biggest storyline in Rams camp isn't even on the roster — yet. Aaron Donald's name hit the transaction wire Aug. 5 for a tryout, and the football world lost its mind. Sean McVay says he's "had conversations" with Donald, but there's no imminent decision. If Donald does return, defensive coordinator Chris Shula admits he's thought about pairing him with Myles Garrett. "I think I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it," Shula said. McVay is playing it cool: "If Aaron is a part of it, it's obviously going to add value to our group." Translation: strap in.

Myles Garrett's Knee Is Talking — But He's Fine

Garrett missed a string of practices with lower-body soreness, and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year returned Wednesday saying he feels good and just needs to get back to 100%. Then he sat out the joint practice against Dallas with knee swelling. McVay says Garrett told him he's about 85% healthy. No panic. Just caution. When he's on the field, his "aura" is apparently visible to teammates. Cornerback Trent McDuffie called him "a monster." We'll take that as a win.

Joint Practice vs. Cowboys: Pass Rush Shows Out

With Garrett sidelined, Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart made themselves impossible to ignore, pressuring Dak Prescott all day. McVay was impressed, though he admitted he needs to watch the tape. On the flip side, Cowboys linebacker Justin Barron picked off Matthew Stafford — one of his three INTs on the day. Stafford was still "great" per McVay, but threw one late over the middle. Even MVPs make mistakes.

QB Battle: Bennett vs. Simpson

Stafford is on a modified schedule — no practice Days 1 and 3 of each block — which means more reps for the backups. Stetson Bennett has "taken incredible strides," per McVay. Rookie Ty Simpson, the No. 13 pick, finally signed his deal and is "improving tremendously." McVay says Simpson will definitely play in the preseason opener against Kansas City. Bennett? Still undecided. That decision could tell us who's the No. 2. Stay tuned.

Kyren Williams changed his whole workout approach, ditching receiver drills to focus on running back fundamentals. "My superpowers, when I'm low to the ground," he said. Expect a different beast this season.

Puka Nacua reported to camp and says holding out "never crossed my mind." He's in a contract year. That's called professional energy.
