Geno Sidelined, Klubnik Delivers: Jets' Backup Battle Just Got Interesting

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Jets' preseason opener turned into an unexpected audition. Geno Smith was scratched Friday night against the Bucs with a sore ankle, and rookie Cade Klubnik grabbed the spotlight.

Coach Aaron Glenn downplayed the injury: "It's nothing to be alarmed about." The soreness came from Wednesday's joint practice, but Smith didn't miss reps and was ready to play. The Jets chose caution, giving Klubnik the start.

Klubnik Makes His Case

The fourth-round pick from Clemson didn't waste the opportunity. In just two series, he led the starting offense to a field goal and a touchdown — including a 31-yard Braelon Allen run. Klubnik completed 5 of 7 passes for 56 yards and converted two third downs. His favorite target? Garrett Wilson, who made a twisting mid-air catch for 21 yards.

"Although I'm a young player, I'm poised. I don't get flustered by big games and big moments," Klubnik said. Coach Glenn echoed that: "He has a moxie to him. He's very confident."

The Battle Behind Geno

Klubnik is fighting Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook for the No. 2 job. Zappe hurt his case with two interceptions, including a pick-6. Cook was a non-factor. As Glenn said, "Today was really a thumbs up for him," but the competition is far from over.

Still, after one preseason night, Klubnik looks like the clear frontrunner. And the Jets' QB depth chart just got a lot more interesting.
