Jerry Jones Isn't Done Dealing: Cowboys Still Hunting for Super Bowl Pieces After Von Miller Splash

OXNARD, Calif. — Jerry Jones showed up to training camp with a warning shot: he'd trade away tomorrow for a Lombardi today. Then he proved it by adding Von Miller. But don't think for a second that means the Cowboys' GM is ready to sit on his hands.

Fresh off locking in the veteran pass rusher on a one-year deal Sunday, Jones made it crystal clear — the roster is not finished.

"I think it's fair to say that if we could improve it, which is almost a cliche, we would," Jones said. "Because again, I'm even more excited today than I was when we started camp that our team is going to be one that if we can have some things go right for us, avoid some injury, we could really be something that we all want to be. And that's a team that's competing for the big games. So bottom line is the answer is, yes, if we saw something that would help us any place, we'd do it."

Jerry's Still Got His Finger on the Trigger

This isn't just talk. Back on July 28, Jones hinted he'd been on the phone with another owner about a potential trade. When asked about those conversations Sunday, he didn't shy away: "Thanks for asking, talked to a few of them on the phone and I'm going to see a bunch of them next week (at an owners meeting)."

Jones didn't think rubbing elbows with the league's power brokers would necessarily spark a deal. But the message is loud and clear: America's Team is in win-now mode.

Von Miller: More Than Just a Name

The addition of Miller has Jones buzzing about the entire pass rush. The Cowboys had been in contact with the Super Bowl champ for "a lot of weeks," and the connection runs deep — pass rush consultant BT Jordan has history with Miller and vouched for what he still has left in the tank.

"Obviously, you get someone that's been there and done that," Jones said. "... He really wants to be here. We want him here and we believe he can come in here and really give us some additional pressure on the other quarterback."

Miller's impact is already being felt in the locker room. Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku spent the offseason working out and learning from the future Hall of Famer — and they're all in on what he brings.

"He's a leader and he's a coach," Gary said. "So being able to have a guy that plays at a high level, won Super Bowls, things like that, just being able to pick his brain, that's all you need. So adding a guy like that to the team and to the room is great."

Brian Schottenheimer made sure to inform the current pass rushers before the move became official. Ezeiruaku gets it — this is the NFL, and adding a legend only raises the bar.

"We understand this is the NFL," Ezeiruaku said, "and bringing a guy like that, a Hall of Fame guy into our room, it'll just help us be better and help this team."

Gary sees the bigger picture: Every move the Cowboys have made screams one thing — they're serious about winning, and they want it right now.
